Press release "Workshop EWNI2010: The European Internet Early Warning Community meets in Hamburg" Hamburg, Germany 29.01.2010 - On January, 27th 2010, the "1st European Workshop on Internet Early Warning and Network Intelligence" (EWNI2010) took place in Hamburg. The workshop brought together some 70 IT-security experts and researchers from all over Europe, as well as participants from countries like USA or Japan. The meeting focussed on both the exchange of practical experiences with defence from internet threats, and the presentation and discussion of new research results. "The results of the different research projects are very promising, as could already be shown in the german early warning testbeds. But by national efforts alone, we cannot counter the threats to these nerve fibers of our information society. There is a strong need for international cooperation to protect the critical communication infrastructures", says Till Dörges, managing director of PRESENSE Technologies GmbH, which organized the workshop in cooperation with the section "SIDAR - Intrusion Detection and Response" of the german society for computer science (GI). The workshop was also supported by DFN-CERT Services GmbH and the "European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA)". The aim of the workshop was to promote the exchange of information about attackers, their tools and methods between Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERT or CSIRT), security teams and research facilities in Europe. In order to allow timely warnings in case of new threats, the methods for the discovery of vulnerabilities and malware must be improved, and the technologies for the protection against attacks must be continuously improved. In a number of lectures, the state of the art in this field of research was presented. Th workshop keynote was held by Professor Freiling from the University of Mannheim. All articles and slides from the workshop will be published on the workshop's website http://www.ewni-workshop.org. Building on the success of this first event, the EWNI workshop series will continue in 2011 to further foster and support exchange and international cooperation of Internet Early Warning efforts. About Early Warning: Due to the constantly changing security threats on the internet, classical security technologies, such as firewalls, anti-virus solutions and intrusion detection systems are no longer sufficient to protect our information and telecommunications infrastructures against new attack techniques. In order to be able to meet this situation not only reactively, but increasingly preventively as well, the german "Federal Office for Information Security (BSI)" set out to build a national IT Early Warning system. This is done in cooperation with the German CERT-Alliance. About PRESENSE Technologies GmbH: PRESENSE Technologies GmbH is a technology company based in Hamburg. The company specializes on new security services, that reliably can detect and counter new attack vectors from the internet. This is done by a combination of established security technologies, innovative sensors and analysis methods.
